Zoning Hardship Homeowner Assistance Ordinance
On June 10, 2012, the Spokane City Council will consider an ordinance that would allow some homeowners who have received a Homestead Exemption to be exempted from paying taxes on their properties.
The Spokane City Council recently adopted a zoning hardship homeowner assistance ordinance. The ordinance allows some homeowners who have received a Homestead Exemption to be exempted from paying taxes on their properties.
Homestead Exemption Homes. The Homestead Exemption Program was implemented in the 1950s to help homeowners purchase homes they could not otherwise afford. The City currently offers two Homestead Exemption Programs: an 80 percent exemption for homeowners who buy new homes in low- or moderate-income areas; and a 100 percent exemption for homeowners who buy or renovate existing homes in low- or moderate-income areas.
Under the Homestead Exemption Program, if a home owner obtains an 80 percent Homestead Exemption for a new home, it is exempted from property taxes for the first 12 years of ownership. After 12 years, homeowners who obtain an 80 percent Homestead Exemption can apply for an additional Homestead Exemption for a new home.
If a home owner obtains a 100 percent Homestead Exemption for an existing home, it is exempt from property taxes for the first 12 years of ownership. After the first 12 years, homeowners who obtain a 100 percent Homestead Exemption can apply for an additional Homestead Exemption for the same home for another 12 years. For more information, see:
